Images of God in Church History, presented by Jennifer Awes Freeman, Ph.D

The Second Commandment (“you shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything”) is often interpreted as a prohibition of images, yet there is abundant evidence of images produced by Jewish and early Christian communities. Questions that will be addressed include: what does it mean to “see theologically”? Can we make images of God? If so, what does it mean to make a “true” image? Presented by Jennifer Awes Freeman, Ph.D, Assistant Professor and Program Director of Arts and Theology at United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities.

Music for the Church Today: Joyfully Blending the Old and the New presented by Sonja Thompson

Sonja Thompson will reflect on changes in church music over time, highlighting its power to root us in our heritage while also inspiring the next generation of churchgoers. She has spent her professional life as educator, church musician, theater musician, conductor, coach and performer, most recently as Augsburg University Organist and currently serves as the Music Associate at Plymouth Congregational Church in Minneapolis. She will be joined in this discussion by Professor Mark Tranvik, Luther Seminary, to talk about the way music and art cultivate abilities, build relationships, and shape our communities.  Ms. Thompson will also play the organ including portions of Bach’s Passion Chorale to guide her presentation.
